From the Pro Vice-Chancellor Research and Research Training Welcome to new students joining ANU midyear. 52 new PhD and research Masters students recently arrived in chilly Canberra to start their research. I met some of you at Orientation and at PARSA social events during the week but extend a warm welcome to all those I haven't yet met. I hope to see you at a welcome or induction event soon. The next official welcome to the ANU research community is on 24 August (see registration link above) and there are others to follow. There will be introductory events in your Colleges too so do take part. Meanwhile I hope you settle in quickly. One of the first things to do is have a meeting with your supervisor and discuss your expectations and theirs. It's really important to understand clearly what each of you is anticipating in your work together. Supervisors will all have their own ways of supporting your research and it's not impolite to ask how they like to supervise and what they expect you to do – it's crucial. Stat chat Statistics training online! Don't hesitate to register for these free courses on statistical methods for researchers. The Statistical Consulting Unit moderates three online statistics courses designed for research students and ANU staff who would like to refresh their skills and knowledge of statistical analysis. These courses are: Introduction to Statistics, Experimental Design and Introduction to Statistical Modelling. Course registration is open throughout the academic year. The e-textbook is supplemented with hands-on examples, exercises and quizzes. Each course takes on average about 30 hours to complete. Register here. Other opportunities 5 August: Climate Café! Change happens all the time, so why is driving particular change generally so hard? Why are the outcomes often unpredictable? Are some types of change easier to achieve than others? Are some techniques for achieving change more effective than others? How can change that is already in train be stopped or deflected? The purpose of this book is to begin the task of developing a comprehensive approach to change by gathering a variety of viewpoints from the academic and practice worlds.
