Welcome note

After a busy few months I’m very glad to say that the Green Paper on 'Redefining the ANU PhD' is available at this link or by emailing ODHDR@anu.edu.au. This Paper represents the start of phase 2 of the consultation process: it provides principles, provocations and initial recommendations as well as a longer discussion section which utilises the views collected at last year’s open forums, from witness statements and discussed at the Committee of Inquiry. Now I am keen to get as many members of the ANU community to read and respond to this paper via Open Forums or the opportunity to submit further written statements. Once this Paper is presented and discussed at Academic Board in October I hope to be able to write the White Paper which will act as a blueprint for the redefined ANU PhD, with a clear plan for each stage of change or enhancement.

The Student Consultative Committee will also be discussing this Paper at our meeting on 10 July 2018. Do contact your representative if you have any issues you want them to raise. Open Forums are also scheduled at the following times. Click on the links to register via Eventbrite:

I am looking at another Open Forum just for students with PARSA (to be confirmed). Further feedback on the Green Paper is invited between 23 July and 3 August 2018 by forwarding brief (2 page maximum) written statements to ODHDR@anu.edu.au.

Perhaps you have friends or colleagues who are yet to start their research degree or masters by coursework? If you do, and they are interested in making a difference to Australia's future in technology and innovation, strengthening Australia-Asia ties or enabling positive social change, please encourage them to consider the ANU Westpac Future Leaders Scholarship. Showcase

The Three Minute Thesis challenges PhD candidates to present their research and its importance in plain language in just 3 minutes. Through participating in 3MT, candidates have the opportunity to develop presentation skills that are crucial for a successful career post PhD, inside and outside of academia.

Training workshops on performance, pitching, and storyboarding your research are being held in July and early August with the ANU College finals held in late August and the ANU Final is on Wednesday 12 September at Llewellyn Hall, ANU. Information on the 3MT and the training courses is here and register for training here.

Shut Up & Write thanks to PARSA has expanded! Three day and two night sessions are now on offer each week and SUAW coffee sessions are now five days a week in five different locations around campus!

Come together in a supportive environment to work on your thesis using the Pomodoro Technique, and enjoy a hearty meal at the day and night sessions or a free coffee or tea. All HDR students welcome.

Writing your literature review? Book a one-to-one consultation with a Library collection advisor for a personalised and efficient approach to searching, evaluating and managing your literature.

Using Word to write your thesis? and EndNote to manage your research. Our workshops will show you how to format efficiently and navigate long documents, understand section breaks and numbering and use templates to maintain consistency in your thesis. Academic Skills & Learning Centre

Need some advice on writing up your research? Wants some ideas on how to work more efficiently? Through one-to-one appointments a Learning Adviser can work closely with you to develop and improve your writing and writing habits. There are also extensive web resources on the Research Writing website. Additionally, ASLC is currently running writing programs in most of Colleges. Links are provided in the events list above and personal invitations have been sent to candidates with registration passwords included. For more information, contact academicskills@anu.edu.au. If your College or School does not currently have a program – contact ASLC to discuss tailoring a program for you. General workshops for all candidates can be found on their Eventbrite page.

ANU Online Wattle, Turnitin & Echo360 training

ANU Online provides training on Wattle (Moodle), Turnitin, Echo360, and using technology for teaching and learning. We offer: face-to-face sessions, monthly online coffee courses – where we discuss topical educational technologies in 15 minutes, or you can join the conversation about education technology with our ANU Online Community.

Training for July includes: Echo360 ALP training on 3, 11, 12, 17, and 19 July, an Online Coffee Course running from 9 Jul – 12 Jul on Designing Online Learning Environments, and Wattle Basics training on 18 and 24 July.

QRN Forum: Qualitative research at the margins: case studies of innovative methods

HDR Administration Support Project

The University is committed to identifying improvements for administration and support functions that affect the HDR student experience. Under the direction of the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research) the ANU Service Improvement Group has a project in progress aiming to identify effective ways of delivering significantly improved HDR Administrative Support outcomes.

Library

The ANU Library has obtained the final two volumes of The Banksias by award-winning botanical artist Celia Rosser, completing the Library’s limited-edition set.

Brewers, barmaids and boozers, a new exhibition from the ANU Archives showcasing the history of Tooth & Co. Ltd, a significant NSW brewer, and the many hotels it owned and supplied throughout the state. Items are on display in the Menzies Library foyer until July along with an online exhibition and interactive map.

A free shuttle to the NLA departs on the hour from 10am to 5pm, Monday to Friday from Hancock to the National Library of Australia. Look for the yellow and blue bus near the entrance to Hancock Library.

New this month from the ANU Press:

Indigenous Mobilities: Across and Beyond the Antipodes explores the way Aboriginal and Māori peoples travel in colonial contexts. It challenges stereotypes of Indigenous people as either fixed or mobile and reframes notions of Indigenous powerlessness during colonisation. As the theme of mobility grows more significant in our understanding of cultures and societies, this volume provides a platform from which crucial new research into the ways that Indigenous people moved, and their motivations for doing so, can progress.

Popular Music, Stars and Stardom delves into the popular fascination with fame and stardom that, in the twenty first century, reaches into almost every facet of public life. The chapters collected in this volume demonstrate the variety of work currently being undertaken in stardom studies by scholars in Australia, ranging from biographical considerations of the stars of popular music, contributions to critical discourses of stardom in the industry more broadly, and the various ways in which the use of astronomical metaphors demonstrate notions of stardom firmly embedded in popular music thought.
