Welcome note

As the year draws to a close life seems to get busier. I hope you’re managing your workload, but also taking the opportunity to enjoy the longer, sunny days. A lot has happened this year and we hope you will see the fruits of some of our labours in 2019. The supervisor development program has begun and will gain further momentum next year with the additional introduction of a supervisor register. Our supervisor workshops to date have been extraordinarily well-received and are continuing in November. This link takes you to remaining events, and I encourage you to remind your supervisors about these opportunities!

I am delighted to announce at long last, that we are making good progress with the development of a dedicated Graduate Research Office (GRO). We will update you early in 2019 with details of location, staffing, and clarification of functions and responsibilities. Watch this space! Our focus has been, and remains, on enhancing the HDR candidate experience so this is a really important step for us.

As mentioned briefly last time, the applications for the Yale 2019-20 Fox International Fellowship have now opened (they will close on December 14th 2018). If you like the idea of spending ten months from August next year at Yale and have a desire to make a difference, this could be for you. You can find more information here, and can always contact my office for more information.

Finally, congratulations to the successful applicants for the Global Young Scientists Summit 2019 (GYSS 2019). All four this year were PhD students, although GYSS is open to early career researchers as well. Join me in congratulating Adrian Cioanca, Jackson Dowie, Ankita Gagrani and Imran Hasan.

Statistical Consulting Unit

The Statistical Consulting Unit (SCU) is located in the Computer Science/Mathematical Sciences Institute building (#145). Consulting support is available, free of charge, to Honours students with research projects, Higher Degree Research students (e.g. Masters, PhD) and staff in all parts of the University. ANU Library

Digital literacy training will conclude at the end of November for the year, however a range of research and learning support resources are available on the Library website. Urgent assistance can be arranged via email or by calling 6125 8886.

The HDR Thesis Submission and Examinations project is now complete!

The Examinations and Graduations Office (EGAP) and the Service Improvement Group (SIG) have spearheaded the creation of a series of digitalised and automated thesis submission and examination eForms. As a result of a collective effort of the HDR University community, the final stage of the project went live on 9 October 2018. The new Thesis Submission Process has been stream-lined to allow for increased administrative efficiency and a faster thesis submission and assessment process. Check out what the changes will mean for you here!

Academic Skills & Learning Centre

Need some advice on writing up your research? Want some ideas on how to work more efficiently? Through one-to-one appointments a Learning Adviser can work closely with you to develop and improve your writing and writing habits. There are also extensive web resources on the Research Writing website. Additionally, ASLC is currently running writing programs in most of Colleges. Links are provided in the events list above and personal invitations have been sent to candidates with registration passwords included. For more information, contact academicskills@anu.edu.au. If your College or School does not currently have a program – contact ASLC to discuss tailoring a program for you. General workshops for all candidates can be found on their Eventbrite page.

ANU Online provides training on Wattle (Moodle), Turnitin, ePortfolio, Echo360 ALP, and using technology for teaching and learning.

QRN Forum: Qualitative research at the margins: case studies of innovative methods

Principles of Tutoring and Demonstrating (PTD) is an intensive 10 module program, designed to help you develop teaching strategies, apply effective lesson planning principles, offer practical help with marking and examples of how to give feedback to your students.

Library

Hancock Library is now open 24/7! This will ensure students and staff have access to additional safe and comfortable study areas on campus. Don’t forgot to bring your student or staff card to access Hancock after hours. And of course, Chifley Library Levels 2 and 3 are also open 24/7.

ANU has launched a new Data Management Planning service DMPTool. Students and academics can now use the DMPTool to easily create data management plans that meet institutional and funder requirements. More information is available on the ANU Library website.

BONUS+ is a free resource-sharing service that allows ANU students and staff to borrow selected material from participating Australian and New Zealand university libraries and pick it up from one of our branches. The BONUS+ service has been enhanced by allowing you a second renewal on borrowed materials! This means you are able to renew materials twice, as long as no one else has requested the same item.

ANU Archives has launched a new exhibition showcasing material relating to early Australian trades – including confectioners, hatters, wigmakers, shearers, railwaymen, stonemasons and undertakers. It has amazing photographs, historical documents and objects. Items are on display in the Menzies Library foyer and ANU Archives Reading Room through January 2019.

ANU Library is continuing their work to rebuild our J.B Chifley Library collection following the February flooding. Prof Paul Pickering and Roxanne Missingham have provided an update on this process, including refurbishing Chifley Level 1 into a student study space, planning for a new Library building, and replacing the materials that were lost.

A free shuttle to the NLA departs on the hour from 10am to 5pm, Monday to Friday from Hancock to the National Library of Australia. Look for the yellow and blue bus at Biology Place, the road next to Hancock Library. The ANU Campus Traveller bus can be tracked in real time using the ANUOK app.

New this month from the ANU Press:

A New Rival State? Australia in Tsarist Diplomatic Communications  - This book is a unique collection of dispatches written in 1857-1917 by the Russian consuls in Melbourne. These dispatches offer a Russian view of the development of the settler colonies in the late nineteenth century and the first years of the federated Commonwealth of Australia.

East Asia Forum Quarterly: Volume 10, Number 4, 2018 – This series has developed a reputation for providing a platform for the best in Asian analysis, research and policy comment on the Asia Pacific region in world affairs. EAFQ aims to provide a further window onto research in the leading research institutes in Asia and to provide expert comment on current developments within the region.

Making Copyright Work for the Asian Pacific: Juxtaposing harmonisation with flexibility – This book provides a contemporary overview of developing areas of copyright law in the Asian Pacific region, taking the perspective that there is a significant amount of potential for the nations of the Asian Pacific region to work together, find common ground and shift international bargaining power.

Statistical Consulting Centre

The Statistical Consulting Unit (SCU) would like to thank Professor Stephen Haslett and Associate Professor Robert Clark for their work at the SCU. Stephen has been a statistical consultant for over 30 years during which time he has published over 100 academic papers and written more than 120 research and consulting reports. Stephen has shown commitment and dedication during his time as Director, working hard to make sure all areas of the university are able to use the SCU’s resources. Robert has been a researcher and teacher for over 25 years, and has published a major textbook on model-based survey sampling, 21 peer-reviewed journal articles and two book chapters. Stephen and Robert ran extremely successful short courses for Honours and HDR students in CASS and CAP this year, and their consulting support has been invaluable to students and staff around the SCU. We wish them both the best luck with their future endeavours, they will be greatly missed.

Postgraduate & Research Students' Association (PARSA)

Shut Up and Write (SUAW) where you come together in a supportive environment to work on your thesis using the Pomodoro Technique, and enjoy a hearty meal courtesy of PARSA.
