From the Pro Vice-Chancellor Research and Research Training Regular Australian Postgraduate Award (APA) applications (for Australian and NZ citizens and permanent residents) closed on 31 October, but there are four still available for study in 2016 under the joint PhD program between ANU and Charles Darwin University (CDU). If you and your supervisor have a collaborative project with CDU, apply by contacting Peter Francis with a statement from your supervisor about the collaboration. One re-entry scholarship is also available for a student returning to study after a career break. There is still some funding left in the Vice-Chancellor's Higher Degree by Research travel fund if you need top-up funding for an international conference or research travel. This is not available for activities within Australia. Read more. The long-awaited, revised Research Awards Rule and related policies are now available to be viewed: Submission and Examination Policy, Supervison and Candidature Policy and Research Awards Rule 2015. They all come into effect on 1 January 2016. Transition arrangements for current students are described in Part 9 of the Research Awards Rule. SPARK Innovation Bootcamp Take part in a hands-on bootcamp that will develop your innovation and commercialisation skills. Learn to use frameworks by exploring local case studies and find the innovation opportunities that are available to you. Friday 13 November. Academics, HDR students and professional staff welcome. The Spark Innovation Bootcamp is an initiative of the ANU Technology Transfer Office, featuring facilitation by business incubator ATP Innovations and the ANU Technology Transfer Office. Key outcomes will include: understanding frameworks and how they apply to your academic career, using innovation frameworks to identify new and exciting career pathways and harnessing innovation and developing strategies to acquire alternative sources of funding. Statistics training online! Don't hesitate to register for these free courses on statistical methods for researchers. The Statistical Consulting Unit moderates three online statistics courses designed for research students and ANU staff who would like to refresh their skills and knowledge of statistical analysis. These courses are: Introduction to Statistics, Experimental Design and Introduction to Statistical Modelling. Course registration is open throughout the academic year. The e-textbook is supplemented with hands-on examples, exercises and quizzes. Each course takes on average about 30 hours to complete. Register now. From the Gender Institute Data, data everywhere but not a drop to drink Wednesday 11 November Dr Lisa Frehill, National Science Foundation, US What is the status of women in science and engineering (S&E) cross-nationally? With growing concerns about equity in S&E, there has been keen interest in cross-national analyses of women's status in S&E. The seemingly simple question, however, hides layers of complexity and inappropriately homogenises S&E. Dr Feehill will briefly speak about the social science methodological considerations associated with cross-national analysis with illustrations from her work with multiple datasets about human resources in S&E. She will then lead a discussion with workshop participants about data challenges in participants' own projects. Read more and register online for this exciting event.
