From the Pro Vice-Chancellor Research and Research Training We surveyed all current students for their views on the research experience at ANU in May (the PRES survey). The results are pretty interesting and a summary report is available on request (email Peter Francis). The 20% who responded were happy with the research environment and with the expertise available to them but told us that we weren't responding to feedback well enough. They also said they weren't really sure how their theses were evaluated and didn't have enough opportunities to discuss their research with other researchers besides their supervisors. We're taking this on board – particularly the point about responding to feedback – and will look for ways to create more opportunities. The Three Minute Thesis (3MT) Competition Congratulations to the 12 finalists who competed in the ANU final. You did yourselves and ANU proud. Kiara Bruggeman from the ANU College of Engineering and Computer Science won the ANU final and is representing the University in the 3MT grand final in Brisbane tomorrow (Friday 2 October). Watch her compete in her semi-final via livestream. She's on at 1.06pm, proceedings commence at 8.46am. Thinking statistically in your research There is no easy road from learning statistics outside of the context of your research area to applying the most relevant statistical methods to your research. The Statistical Consulting Unit (SCU) offers a context-dependent approach to statistical thinking within your research area through short courses by design. Statistical thinking within your research area can be developed, for example, using journal articles and case studies. Here's the plan: get together with your course convener and contact the SCU to set up a short course targeted to statistics relevant to your research. The course content and delivery format will be decided by agreement between the SCU and convener. The course can be lecture-based, group discussion or could involve hands-on teaching using statistical software. Email the SCU. From the Counselling Centre The art of failing and how it might help us succeed Tuesday 20 October, 12.30–1.30pm. Location: Finkel Theatre, JCSMR Building 131, Garran Road, ANU. No registration required. Presented by Maureen MacGinley. This seminar will explore the art of failing and how it might contribute to or undermine success. What is failure? What does it mean to fail? Could the art of failing, that is what we do when we fail, be important to our wellbeing, creativity and success? This talk may sound like an exploration of failure but ultimately it could help guide us toward a clearer exploration of what helps us create and succeed in academia, relationships and in how we relate to ourselves.
