November Edition
I am pleased to announce that Professor Imelda Whelehan has been appointed as the Dean, Higher Degree Research commencing on 17 January 2017. Professor Whelehan brings a wealth of experience to the role and will provide the academic leadership, strategic direction and oversight of the University’s Higher Degree Research Programs while continuing the work of improving the HDR experience at ANU.

Last month the Higher Degree Research Committee (HDRC) discussed the implications of changes to HDR funding announced by the Commonwealth Government. While the existing Research Training Scheme, Australian Postgraduate Awards (APA) and the International Postgraduate Research Scholarships (IPRS) programs will be replaced by a single Research Training Program, this will have no immediate effect on continuing students.  These changes are very welcome and will allow greater flexibility regarding both stipend and fee scholarships. We will provide updates on what this means for research training at ANU and communicate any changes that affect you in due course.

Secondly, while the milestones process has moved online and is working well, there is still a great deal of opportunity to improve the milestones process to ensure that it supports candidates to successfully complete.  We will be consulting with both HDR students and supervisors regarding how to improve the feedback loop regarding supervisory arrangements in particular given concerns re confidentiality. In response to your feedback, the Research Integrity Training course on wattle (part of the online milestone system) has been enhanced and modified, including the exam – understanding how to conduct your research with integrity and
rigour is extremely important and we hope this changes have improved the system for you.

Lastly, a reminder that all messages from ANU are sent to your university email address. If you route your ANU email via Gmail or another mail client, our messages may be blocked, so don’t miss important messages from us, monitor your email so you can respond to any important communications. Previous ANU Research Digests can be found here.
