HDR Update
|
The fluff is falling from poplar trees on campus and across Canberra. This is a sign that the end of the academic year is approaching, and it is time to start preparing for end-of-year exams and assessments. You might not have exams as an HDR candidate, but you can join in ANU Academic Writing Month (AcWriMo) in November and achieve some writing goals for the year. Hopefully this month we will start to see some sunshine after all this rain too.
Thank you to those of you who participated in the Postgraduate Research Evaluation Survey (PRES) in October. We really appreciate your input, and we will use it to inform changes we make that impact your experience and that of future candidates. There is another opportunity to have your say and be part of improving student experience at ANU: the Student First program is looking for HDR candidates to take part in interviews, workshops and co-design sessions aimed at capturing and improving your experiences. Generous incentives are offered as well as the chance to meet other HDR candidates. Find out more and sign up here.
A reminder PARSA is still operating as normal while we work to develop the new postgraduate services model for 2023. The Postgraduate Services Support and Representation taskforce, including representatives from PARSA and ANUSA, is working altogether to ensure continuity of services and designing what the new model will look like. PARSA continues to provide a range of support services to HDR students as usual.

Preparing for the academic job market
|
The competition for good jobs in academia is fierce - what sort of skills and capabilities do you need to stand out? In this 4-hour workshop, Professor Inger Mewburn shares the research on academic job ads, which shows that academic jobs require a broad range of ‘non-research’ skills, which you have the opportunity to sharpen while you are enrolled in a PhD.

Thesis Boot Camp
|
The Thesis Boot Camp is back! Join us for the 'write 20,000 words on a weekend' challenge in December. The concept is disarmingly simple. Put a group of people experiencing similar issues in the same room for a weekend, feed them regularly and provide a reward for each 5,000 words written. Think it can't be done? Come along and find out. The registrations close on 16 Nov 2022.
