HDR Update

Summer is over and we move into autumn. In my opinion this is the best season in Canberra and there are plenty of events around town in March. I encourage you to get out and enjoy the beautiful weather.

We have been talking a lot about engaging with industry and in 2022 developed a strategy to support HDR candidates to engage with a range of researcher end-users. This could be in the form of one-off events, internships, joint supervision or industry-based PhDs. We have developed a set of resources to help you engage. You can find it here. To help you understand what is there we invite you to join us for an information session on 14 March; register and find out more information here.

Last year we asked you to share your experiences with us through the Postgraduate Research Experience Survey (PRES). Thank you for participating. We learned that satisfaction with resourcing, professional development and research culture improved over 2021. We saw some decrease in satisfaction with supervision and overall satisfaction. We are working to provide the tools to help supervisors to support you and are looking at the details in the survey to help us improve your experience. We will be running the PRES again in May this year and look forward to using the information you provide us to make ANU a better place to learn.

Selling your research skills to non-academic employers
How do you convince an employer that you are the right person for the job? It’s all about the story you tell with the skills and experience you already have. In the workshop we will cover:
  • The differences between academic and non-academic CVs
  • The types of skills that most employers are looking for - and how you can demonstrate them.
  • How to ‘dress’ your online presence so employers are more likely to give you an interview.
