HDR Update

I hope you are enjoying those cooler nights and mornings and that crisp something in the air that is so particular to Canberra in autumn. The warmest of welcomes to our newest cohort of PhD and MPhil candidates. I hope you enjoyed meeting each other at the April induction, and take that great energy forward into the exciting time that is the start of your research. We are here to support you when you need it and to celebrate your successes.

This month all PhD and MPhil candidates will be invited to participate in the Postgraduate Research Experience Survey (PRES). Please do take this opportunity to tell us about your experience. The PRES is a very important measure of what we are doing well and an important way that we can learn what needs to improve. We are making changes based on what you have told us.

In the next few weeks we will be introducing iThenticate. Similar to Turnitin, iThenticate is a text matching tool that is suitable for use with research theses. You will be able to access it through ISIS to check your work as you go and help you diagnose referencing issues. In July, we will start to use iThenticate as part of the thesis submission process. More information can be found here.

This year sees the launch of the new National Industry PhD Program. This program funds PhD projects that are co-designed with industry partners or are for professionals who are supported by their employers to undertake a PhD. If you think you might be interested you can find out more on our HDR Industry Engagement site.

PR for academics
PR for Academics is a series of research communication workshops designed to help academics become better communicators and share their research outside the walls of the academy. In these 1.5-hours workshops, unpack the mysteries of podcasting, make documentaries, put on an exhibition, make a TikTok video and learn to write and talk about your research in engaging and winning ways with our resident communications expert, Simon Clews

Do you need to write about your research? Do supervisors keep suggesting changes? Research writing has different challenges from other kinds of writing: the concepts are very complex, the amount of information is vast, and the stakes are high. In these 2-hour workshops, we show you how to do this through implementing practical strategies that are efficient and effective, resulting in writing of the highest quality.

Transformative Agreements for Open Access Publishing
Open Access publishing is becoming more and more significant for scholars, but the ways we can publish our research in reputable outlets without paying steep author's fees can be confusing. ANU has entered into major agreements with several publishers which means that you might already be able to publish Open Access for free in some of the leading journals in your field.

Three Minute Thesis (3MT)
The Three Minute Thesis is an international competition for higher degree research candidates to showcase their research. Candidates present to an audience on what their research is and why it is important in plain language for three minutes, with only a single PowerPoint slide. Please find the training workshops to compete in the #ANU 3MT given below:

Announcement

It's with sadness we report that Victoria Firth-Smith (who most of us know as V) has resigned from the ANU Researcher Development team. Many of you would have worked with, or encountered V, in a committee, induction session, workshop or bootcamp. I know we are not the only ones who will miss her infectious enthusiasm, generosity of spirit and keen intelligence. V is moving on to new, exciting projects and we wish her all the best. She taught us here at ANU Researcher Development how to be better, more aware humans - and how to put that awareness to work. We continue without her, but so much stronger for all her contributions.
