With December kicking off, keep your ears open for the summer sounds of cicadas. Did you know that cicadas are the loudest insects in the world and that they produce their song by contracting specialised muscles in their abdomen? Apart from the singing cicadas, summer is usually a quiet time on campus and in Canberra, perfect for taking a break or scheduling focus time for your work.
If your research is in social, political or health science, you might find the courses offered by the Australian Consortium for Social and Political Research Incorporated (ACSPRI) very useful for your professional development. ACSPRI is offering scholarships to financially support HDR candidates who would like to attend these courses, so please have a look at their Indigenous HDR Scholarship, Summer Program Scholarship or Fellowship Program.
I also wanted to highlight that the ANU Statistical Support Network is sponsoring the establishment of an online support group for Stata users (Stata Users ANU). Join them at their launch morning tea on 6th December or on their Teams site after the launch.
Congratulations to all graduating PhD and MPhil candidates. I really look forward to attending graduations as it is such a wonderful opportunity to celebrate your achievements. I hope you have a wonderful end of year and we will see you in 2024!

Academics often have to pick up and put down a piece of writing, making it hard to find focus and flow. PhD students can experience the same problems when they are forced to go part time to complete their project. Learn how to complete writing projects 'on top of everything else' and without losing your mind. If you have a writing project you're struggling to get done, we'll show you how to make progress.
The old mantra of ‘publish or perish’ is fast being replaced by ‘be visible or vanish'. PR for Academics is a workshop series designed to help you become a better communicator, to develop and maintain a visible presence and to share your research with the world.
