Congratulations and welcome to The Australian National University!

As a new starter you have a number of induction courses to undertake within your probation period. Depending on your work area there may be additional modules to complete so consult with your supervisor.  If you are unsure whether you need to undertake a specific module please speak with your supervisor.

First week

First month

ModuleTarget Audience

WHSMS for Managers and Supervisors

The WHS Management System training is a mandatory training for all managers and supervisors including academic supervisors for HDR students once per 3 years. It is designed to assist the managers and supervisors to understand their legislative duties prescribed under the WHS legislations as well as the University WHS Management System requirements. The training completion is closely monitored by your Director and the University WHS Committee.

Core Module 1: Thinking about cultures and identities

This module gives you the opportunity to reflect on the notion of culture and how your own cultural influences impact how you think and behave toward others. It is a critical first step towards (re)thinking about how to engage with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and peoples from other diverse cultural backgrounds.

Core Module 2: My country, our country

An introduction to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and worldviews. It provides you with key statistical information; explains the central importance of Country and introduces the fundamental elements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander laws and societies.

Cyber Sense Training

Phishing

This section provides users with an understanding of what social engineering (specifically phishing, and quishing) tactics are commonly deployed by scammers/hackers in order to gain access to their data or systems (including the ANU system), and how to spot these tactics and avoid compromising their security. This section also provides guidance on how to report phishing attacks and compromised systems and provides a link for further guidelines.

Protect your Privacy

This section provides users with an understanding of types of personal data online - information that is about you (name, email address, etc) and information that is you (browsing habits, networks, preferences, etc) - and how to manage and protect this information. Information includes the importance of a strong password, password managers, and understanding and questioning app permissions. This section also provides guidance on how to detect and deflect data breaches and provides a link for further guidelines.

Protect your Device

This section provides users with an understanding of how to protect their personal and ANU devices against intrusion or virus/malware attack but controlling how the device is used and connected. Information includes avoiding free wi-fi and charging stations, use of a VPN, scrutinising app sources and permissions, and how to secure your device. This section also provides guidance on how to report a lost ANU device and provides a link for further guidelines.

ANU Privacy Awareness

This module provides users with an understanding of the meaning of privacy and why it matters to ANU, the meaning of 'personal information', the scope of privacy laws that apply at ANU, and what the privacy principles say, and how they apply in practice.

This module is an introduction to fraud control and prevention at the University, including what it is, how to recognise it, and how to report it.
