Southeast Asia Liaison Office
The Southeast Asia Liaison Office is based in the Australian High Commission in Singapore, and interlinks research and academic partnerships, alumni and community engagement, and philanthropy, with the aim of facilitating the development of research and education partnerships in the region.
Launched in 2018, the ANU Southeast Asia Liaison Office plays a key role in the Australian whole-of-government approach to developing regional multilateral relations. The significance of Southeast Asia to ANU is embedded in the founding legislation of the University in 1946. The national university was mandated to develop and maintain world-leading expertise of Australia’s region, and devote its attention to the complex and evolving challenges confronting Australia, its neighbours, and the world.
Today, the ANU is proud of its rich history of multi-faceted relationships and partnerships in the region. The ANU currently has ongoing collaborations across Southeast Asia in disciplines such as engineering; physical, environmental and earth sciences; chemical, biological, and medical and health sciences; information and computing; public policy; economics; law; arts; and Asian studies, languages and studies in human societies. We have over 5,200 recorded alumni based in Southeast Asia who are transforming societies as political, business, government, and academic leaders.
The University is also home to the largest community of academic specialists on Southeast Asia in the world, outside Southeast Asia itself. ANU hosts leading expertise on the study of the region with vigorous and influential research in Australia and globally. The ANU Regional Institutes are hubs for interdisciplinary research, innovative collaboration and support networks for both scholars are students from across the Australian National University. These include:
- The Indonesia Institute
- Malaysia Institute
- Myanmar Research centre
- Southeast Asia Institute
Today, we are excited by the prospects of future opportunities in the region. The ANU is looking to engage in new collaborative ventures, and to reconnect with our valued alumni. We welcome the opportunity to discuss such opportunities.
