EV charging

EV charging stations on campus

From 2024, there are two places to charge electric vehicles on campus.

  • Six DC fast electric vehicle (EV) chargers near the School of Art and Design
  • One charger in the Geology Close carpark in front of the Ian Ross Building can charge two vehicles. Charging at this location is free to the public and supported by the ANU School of Engineering.

In early 2025, four more fast chargers will be installed on the north side of campus in the Fulton Muir Building car park.

Check PlugShare.com for more up to date information on these locations.

Safety notice to all staff and students for charging your EV on campus

Please be aware that you can only charge your electric vehicle on Acton campus using an allocated EV charging bay. Charging your EV using other methods is not permitted and may be unsafe.

For instance, while charging an electric car with an extension cable using a standard 3-pin plug is possible, experts and safety groups advise against charging an electric car because of the associated safety risks.

Extension cords aren't typically made to handle the high and sustained electrical current needed for EV charging over extended periods. Carrying these high loads for sustained periods of time can lead to potential hazards such as overheating or electrical fires.

If you see this behaviour occurring or observe the installation of external PowerPoints for use in EV charging (i.e. not an allocated EV charging bay), please notify the ANU Parking Office at (02) 6125 0179 during office hours, Monday-Friday 9am – 5pm. Please call ANU Security (02) 6125 2249 outside of these hours.

For life-threatening emergencies, first call 000 (or 0000 if dialling from an internal phone).

Owning an electric vehicle

Novated lease options for electric vehicles are available to ANU staff. The ACT Government also provides incentives to help make EV ownership more affordable. Additionally, with the Australian Government's Electric Car (EV) Discount, a novated lease on an eligible EV is exempt from Fringe Benefit tax, meaning you don't pay any post-tax contributions. For information, check out the ANU salary sacrificing options and the ACT Climate Choices - zero emissions vehicle incentives.
