Travelling across campus

Active travel is a great way to incorporate physical activity into your schedule, is more sustainable, and can be free.

Cycling

Cycling is a safe and easy way to get around the campus and the whole of Canberra. There are dedicated cycling paths throughout the city. There are outdoor bike shelters scattered across the Acton campus where you can securely lock up your bike and shower amenities in many buildings if you have an energetic ride.

Interested in using an e-bike to get to campus instead? You can register for a free e-bike trial for two weeks from the Canberra Electric Bike Library to see if it's the right choice for you. For eligible staff interested in purchasing an e-bike for commuting, ANU salary sacrifice options include e-bike purchases. Read more here.

E-scooters are also available on campus and are able to be used for travel across campus. To find out more information, including how to sign up for use of these scooters, visit the Transport Canberra website.

To ensure individual safety and the safety of staff, students and visitors to Acton campus, please ensure you comply with the ACT Government requirements regarding personal mobility devices.

Walking

Walking is usually the simplest way to get around campus and has many long-term health and wellbeing benefits. The city and major public transport interchanges are a 5–15 minute walk from most parts of the campus, and well-maintained paths allow for easy, direct routes from one precinct to another.

Staff and students are encouraged to use lighted footpaths when walking at night. ANUOK is the official safety and wellbeing app for our ANU community. ANU Security and Uni Safe Patrol can escort you from University buildings to car parks, halls and colleges at night. Call 6125 2249.

Driving

Active travel (walking, cycling, scooting) is recommended for travelling across campus. Driving is often slower than active travel options, and many usually experience difficulties finding a car park at their destination.

When driving on campus, you should be cautious of significant pedestrian traffic and occasional wildlife crossings. Always observe the speed limit of 40km per hour unless otherwise sign-posted, and take care at intersections and pedestrian crossings. There are several 10 km per hour shared zones across campus where pedestrians and cyclists have the right of way.

Many students live on campus and reside on Daley Road, Mills Road, and Childers Street. These areas are high-traffic zones for vehicles, pedestrians and e-scooter users.

Canberra is the bush capital, and many types of wildlife call our campuses home. Be aware of any animals and give them space when travelling through campus.
