Why skip SELT?
What is this project about?
Why skip SELT? is a pilot project aimed at understanding why some ANU students do not participate in the Student Experience of Learning and Teaching (SELT) survey. The main goals of this research are to:
- uncover reasons for non-response to the SELT survey
- develop new approaches informed by this information to encourage more students to complete the SELT survey
- provide a more accurate picture of SELT responding to decision-makers.
This project is focused on understanding why people do not respond to SELT in general. Importantly, it is not designed to provide feedback on specific teachers or classes.
Having a more accurate understanding of why some students do not respond to SELT helps us to undertake more effective engagement strategies. The more that students respond to SELT, the more that feedback is representative of the diversity of students in the ANU community. High quality data can support us to come to decisions that lead to high quality outcomes for all.
How does it work?
This survey is seeking feedback from ANU students who:
- were invited to complete SELT in at least one course in Semester 1, 2024
- but did not provide any SELT feedback in Semester 1, 2024.
Interested students complete a short anonymous form about their SELT participation last semester to see if they are eligible to take part. Click here to take the eligibility check form.
If eligible students decide to take part after learning more about this project, they then provide a contact number for a 10-minute interview conducted via phone at a time of their choosing.
Participants who complete an interview via phone will be able to collect a Coffee Lab voucher, as a thank you for their time.
Interviews will occur during October 2024 on Monday, Tuesday and Friday mornings between 10:00am and 12:00pm.
How does this project impact me? What is the data used for?
Participation is voluntary and we have designed this process so that your responses are not linked to any information that can identify you.
The only personal information you provide in the form used to sign-up to this project is your phone number so that we can reach you to conduct the interview. This number is not stored with any of your responses from the interview and will not be accessible to anyone unrelated to the administration of this research.
This means:
- no individual can be identified in any reporting
- all responses will be stored securely within the ANU Planning and Service Performance Division system with appropriate privacy protocols
- we do not audio-record our phone conversation with you; we only take written notes to identify themes your responses.
A summary of themes identified in this project may be shared with the ANU Centre for Learning and Teaching, University Executives and relevant committees.
