Codes & classifications
Through the Commonwealth Grant Scheme (CGS), the Australian Government subsidises tuition costs for higher education students across a wide range of discipline areas and qualification levels. The level of Commonwealth Support and Student Contribution amounts are determined by course load and course Field of Education (per the Australian Standard Classification of Education (ASCED)), organised into funding clusters, as defined in the Department of Education and Training funding cluster documents referenced here.
These Fields of Education are also utilised to categorise courses into bands and tiers, for the purpose of International and domestic fee setting.
Australian Standard Classification of Education (ASCED)
ASCED comprises two component classifications: Level of Education and Field of Education. This provides a basis for comparing administrative and statistical data on educational activities and attainment. ASCED is managed by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).
Tertiary Collection of Students Information (TCSI)
The Tertiary Collection of Student Information (TCSI) is a framework for the collection of data from higher education and VET Student Loan providers, which is used to inform policy and programs, produce publications, and assist Services Australia with the administration of student payments.
Data collected through TCSI is used to manage student Commonwealth supported education loans. This data is also used to inform funding and reconciliation of provider payments.
Student data is collected under the Higher Education Support Act 2003, the VET Student Loans Act 2016 and the Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency Act 2011.
