Higher Degree Research Candidate Induction to ANU

Provider business unit: ANU Researcher Development

Welcome to ANU!

To get your PhD off to a flying start, it is highly recommended that you attend the HDR new candidate induction. This is a jam-packed week of face-to-face events and workshops designed to get your HDR candidature off on the right track. You'll come away with a heap of useful information, an address book full of new friends, and an idea of how you can make the next four years really work for you. The flyer for the event can be downloaded here

Our 2025 dates are:

  • Monday April 7 to Friday April 11 (Register here)
  • Monday September 1 to Friday September 5 (Registrations will open later in the year)

The program includes an official Welcome to ANU with a traditional Welcome to Country and smoking ceremony and addresses from both the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research & Innovation) and the Pro Vice-Chancellor (Graduate Research).

You'll have informative content from the Researcher Development team and  a mix of sessions by service providers from across the whole university, so you can see the full suite of support on offer. Your academic school and/or college will offer information sessions and other enrichment activities on one or more of the days. These will be a good chance to get to know other HDR candidates in your local area.

There is also an optional (free) scholars’ dinner as part of the program. Please register here.

And an excursion will be part of the ANU HDR Induction program. It is free of cost and lunch will be provided. Please register here. Or, alternatively, you can undertake a Research project management workshop, in which case please register here

All HDR candidates are expected to attend Induction Week - even if you have been a student at ANU before - it really will set you up for the next four years and can also be a lot of fun.
