Supporting Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander employment and development

Reconciliation Week 2021

MORE THAN A WORD. RECONCILIATION TAKES ACTION.

Update on Indigenous Employment Initiatives at the ANU

ANU aspires to be the University of choice for Indigenous Australians, not only for students, but also as an employer. ANU is undertaking a range of initiatives to support the employment and retention of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff.

The Human Resources Division is working with a local Indigenous recruitment agency, to attract more applications from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders to ANU jobs. Since early 2021, all ANU jobs are now advertised on Pipeline Talent, a Canberra-based Indigenous recruitment agency. ANU jobs can be seen here on the Pipeline Talent job portal.

The Human Resources Division is working closely with the First Nations Portfolio to undertake a review of the Indigenous academic recruitment programs, both established in 2017:

The aim of these programs is to recruit Early Career Academics who have the potential to become academic leaders in their discipline area, and work towards building a substantial Indigenous research and education community that can generate world leading and influential Indigenous-led research. Consultation is currently underway with key stakeholders, and a Review Committee has been formed to review the programs and provide recommendations for their ongoing implementation. If you wish to provide input into the review, please email Hayley Torabi, Senior Consultant – Indigenous Employment and Retention at: indigenous.employment@anu.edu.au.

The Core Cultural Modules developed by AIATSIS, continue to be available for all staff and students to complete, with modules one and two mandatory for all new starters. Later this year, we will be exploring opportunities to strengthen our cultural learning through a broader learning strategy and program. Staff can access and complete the Core Cultural Modules via Pulse.

The ANU Indigenous Trainee and Apprentice Program is going strong, having been in operation since 2011. Recently, a Welcome BBQ was hosted at the Tjabal Centre to welcome the new trainees who have started in 2021. ANU is also proud to have had three of our trainees nominated for the ACT Trainee of the Year Awards.

The Human Resources Division is looking at ways to further support and strengthen the ANU Indigenous Staff Network by providing regular communication, support, and opportunities for informal peer support and networking. For Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff who want to get involved, please email indigenous.employment@anu.edu.au.
